Animals & Thunderstorms??

On a hot summer day, your animal companion all of a sudden starts panting, pacing, shaking, twitching, or even hides under the bed. Yep - they sense the change in the barometric pressure and may hear the low frequency rumblings of the thunder which may cause anxiety and stress.

Here are a few tips I use to calm Bailey, my animal companion, during a thunderstorm (Each animal is different):

  • Bach Flower Essences - I make a tincture using Aspen (fear of the unknown, sudden anxiety), Mimulus (fear of known things), Honeysuckle (memories of past thunderstorms), Star of Bethlehem (past trauma from thunderstorms), Rescue Remedy ( for nervousness, panicky), and Walnut (cut cords from the memory). I make a stock bottle of natural spring water, a few drops of each essence, and then spray it into Bailey’s field when a storm is coming.

  • Clear the energy using a pendulum on the physical, emotional, and spiritual/mental plane. This may include grounding, using crystals/essential oil/color frequencies, clearing emotions such as anxiety, fear, stress, or bringing into balance the energy centers (chakras).

  • Tapping - (“EFT -Emotional Freedom Technique”) - is a powerful stress relief technique. It is similar to acupressure by using touch to stimulate the acupoints and focuses on the 12 meridians of the body to relieve symptoms of a negative experience or emotion. It is an alternative therapy for anxiety, Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), etc… You can either tap/rub the points on the animal or use yourself as a surrogate.

  • Reiki - is a gentle non-evasive method of healing. It is the flow of energy through the hands of the practitioner to the animal. Reiki is all energy, it heals on all levels – physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual. It supports the body’s natural ability to heal itself while calming the mind and body creating a place of peace. Since animals are energetic beings, they are very receptive to reiki which will calm the body and nervous system during a thunderstorm.

Hope these tips were helpful to calming your animal companion during the next thunderstorm!
